Elgato Prompter XL Brings Pro Features to One of Our Favorite Studio Tools

Elgato has announced the Prompter XL, a larger, studio-oriented teleprompter designed for creators who need a wider, brighter script display with broader camera compatibility. We use the original Elgato Prompter in our studio for our YouTube videos, and it’s the best prompter solution we’ve found for clarity, setup speed, and quick workflows.

The Prompter XL builds on that with a 15.6-inch Full HD display, anti-reflective glass, and mounting options that Elgoato says can accommodate “DSLR” cameras, though they clearly mean cameras in general. It’s one of my pet peeves that people still say “DSLR” to refer to any interchangeable lens camera. It would be like calling an EV a gas-powered car. Okay, rant over, back to the news.

The Elgato Prompter XL is positioned for pro creators, interview rigs, and teaching environments where reliable prompting and easy integration with Elgato’s ecosystem matter.

The Elgato workflow is the one part of the original prompter I took issue with. Elgato’s native prompter solutions aren’t as good as other software tools I use in the studio. The Prompter’s own software can be turned off, allowing the Prompter to be used as a secondary display.

I use the excellent web-based teleprompter tool Speakflow, which uses a computer’s built-in mic to scroll through a script. If you’re streaming on Twitch or other channels and want to interact with viewers, Elgato’s solution is great. If you’re recording a talking-head video, give Speakflow a try.

In our studio, the original Prompter works perfectly at a distance of three to ten feet, so the Prompter XL will be better suited for bigger studios, or for on-camera talent that prefers to read longer chunks of text at a time.
